Discover the beauty of soft pastels. This 5-week course will introduce the uninitiated to the foundation techniques of pastel painting as well as advance those with intermediate skills. It will cover how to maximise the use of the colour wheel and coloured pastel papers and will explore the different types of mark-making to create dynamic paintings. A variety of genre will be explored with input from students encouraged. Demonstrations will be provided at the start of class with plenty of one on one assistance available throughout. These enjoyable classes are aimed at building the confidence to explore new ideas, mastering and sharing the joy of painting with this beautiful and vibrant medium.
(NOTE: It's important to purchase soft pastels for ease of use--some are too hard. Janette recommends Art Spectrum, Unison or Sinelier because of their strong colour and how well they glide. A starter set of basic colours in Art Spectrum is about $60.00 for 15 full size sticks. The next reasonable option is a starter kit of Mont Martre, 24 sticks for $25.00 or Staedtler - you can get a box of 48 for $50.00.)
Full size pastel paper to be purchased at the start of class for $7.00 a sheet.
A backing board - 70 cm x 50 cm, either MDF or foam core.
A broad selection of soft pastels - warm and cool tones. Art Spectrum, senelier or unison are a good choice.
Paper towels ( to keep hands clean)
A white conte stick or pastel pencil for drawing up
Soft brush
Apron or art shirt
A sketch pad and pencil
2 sheets of newspaper.
This pastel class is hosted by South Australian pastel artist, Janette Humble, who recently featured in an episode of the popular art series 'Colour in Your Life'.
Please refer to the materials list for what you need to bring.
6 tickets available.
PLEASE NOTE: This is a soft pastel workshop, not oil pastels or pastel pencils.
