Portrait Painting with Daryl Austin

Images will be available for this intensive portrait drawing and painting workshop. It is open to artists of all skill levels. The class will explore methods and techniques to simplify the painting of the portrait. Demonstrations will be given, as well as plenty of one-on-one tuition.
The full-day, workshop is hosted by award-winning South Australian artist, Daryl Austin and will explore painting and brushwork as well as how to mix skin tones when painting in acrylics or oils.
Daryl is Head of Painting at Adelaide Central School of Art, where he has taught painting since 2001, and is currently represented by the Greenaway Art Gallery, Adelaide South Australia.
Daryl’s talent has been recognised by numerous awards, such as the EVA Award, Adelaide (1993), Kernewek Lowender Art Prize (1993), Winner Santos Whyalla Art Prize (1997), Winner City of Whyalla Art Prize , University of Adelaide – Vice Chancellor Portrait Commission [2003) and Parliament of South Australia – President of Legislative Council Portrait commission (2005), Heysen Landscape Prize 2018.

*Desktop or standing easels are available for use.
*Oil or acrylic paints as follows: Yellow ochre; Cadmium yellow; Cadmium red; Alizarin crimson; Ultramarine blue; Cobalt blue; Titanium white; Ivory black.
*General painting medium to suit (liquin, liquol etc) +container
*Odourless solvent (oil painters only) +container
*Rags (or we have paper towels available)
*A3 drawing board to suit paper
*Palette (disposable or otherwise).
*Charcoal pencil and soft willow charcoal (thin sticks)
*Eraser, soft and hard
*Selection of brushes: chisel, filbert, a selection of round brushes, and a fine rigger for detail. Your art supply shop can help. Reasonable quality means better results.
*A4 drawing paper, sheets or pad
*Notebook and pencil
*Oil or acrylic painting paper; 3-4 sheets for colour-mixing purposes
*A4 size canvas for final painting, or suitable surface for chosen medium, such as oil paper.
*Baby wipes for cleaning hands.
Terms and conditions: Full payment at time of booking is essential. Fees are non refundable unless classes are cancelled by the tutor for reasons of minimum numbers not being met, or other reason provided. Check costs at time of booking as they are subject to change without notice. Materials are not included unless stated. Classes will be cancelled if a catastrophic fire warning has been issued.
Where can I park?
Atelier Crafers is on Cox Place, Crafers – directly behind the BP service station on Main Street.
Parking is available at the tennis courts on Sharrod Court at the rear of Atelier Crafers and on the kerb opposite Atelier Crafers. We ask that you do not park in the car parks designated as private or in other people’s driveways.
An accessible parking space is available at the front of Atelier Crafers for those who have a disabled parking permit.
Bus routes run up the freeway regularly to the Crafers park n ride and the Main Street of Crafers.
Where can I buy coffee and food?
We have a full café that will be available before, during and after your workshop.
