FABER CASTELL POLYCHROMOS (ARCHIVAL & LIGHTFAST) PENCIL ON CANSON HERITAGE WATERCOLOUR PAPER
An archival drawing, The Wake Up Call is a richly coloured Faber Castell Polychromos colour pencil on 640 gm Canson Heritage watercolour paper with lovely deckled edges mounted on a simple white mat and framed under museum grade glass with a white frame to accentuate it's beauty.
It takes many hours to create these drawings, using laboriously applied layers of colour. There is wonderful detail in the feathers and other patterns, built around a composition of four bright birds/hills. It features a round circular sun in the upper half to balance the complexity in the lower half of the drawing.
This work is concerned with climate change, using the metaphor of the ‘canary in the coal mine’ as a way of talking about species loss and environmental destruction. The WHO asserts that climate change is the greatest threat to humanity, but it’s obviously a massive environmental threat to all species, including birds. I like to use birds in my work as a way of symbolically talking about the spirit too.
