Myriad of borer holes
Red Flowering Gum (Corymbia ficifolia)
A friend provided the timber for this piece. On inspecting the blank before turning, I expected many borer holes but the extent was not clear. On turning the initial cylinder it was evident that the borer holes were many and varied. I then decided to turn a basic vase shape. It was then hollow formed, sanded and polished with Danish Oil. The dark sapwood running between the top and bottom (heart wood) of the vase adds an exquisite contrast of colours amongst the myriad of borer holes
Measures 20cmH, 8cm diam at opening.
